FYI: James Knox's Jazz Photos

Congrats to James Knox (AKA Daddy Jazz) who has some great news:

CAPTURING THE MOMENT: A SPECTACULAR EXHIBIT OF JAZZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOGRAPHER JAMES KNOX WILL OPEN ON JUNE 16, 2007 IN THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CENTER OF THE SAN FRANCISCO PUBLIC LIBRARY

"A moment is defined as a minute portion, a point of time, or a comparatively brief period of time. In music, the moment is when all is right. The singer or musician is on the stage giving their all and the audience can feel the intensity. As a photographer, my goal is to capture, through my lens, those special moments: the chanteuse singing notes to the heavens, the piano player swinging hard or the horn player blowing notes through the roof." James Knox

I can't make any promises (especially with a trip to Philly a couple of weeks before the exhibit opening), but I will try to finally make it to the West Coast to see the exhibit and visit James on his home turf.

Soul Is Universal

Guy Sebastian sings Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" (with a heart-felt take on "Tired Of Being Alone" as well).

Terrance Has Tons Of Patience

I don't read the rag and don't care if they acknowledge me and mine.

An Open Letter to Ebony Magazine by Terrance Heath/The Republic of T.

To the Editors of Ebony Magazine:

I grew up with Ebony. My parents subscribed to both Ebony, and I can recall grabbing each new issue and reading it cover to cover when it arrived. But eventually I stopped rushing to pick it up, and rarely read it as an adult. The reason is because I so rarely saw myself reflected in its pages. I felt invisible.

I am a black gay man. I am also a father. So when I saw your cover story, "The New Black Father," I bought a copy and was as anxious to read it as I had been when I was growing up. Again, I was disappointed...

Playing around with a photo taken in Baltimore. We were at the Visionary museum and chanced upon a photobooth. So this shot taken in a museum gets the museum treatment courtesy of dumpr.

Breathing While Black Is Still Alive

Arrested While Grieving By BOB HERBERT

No one is paying much attention, but parts of New York City are like a police state for young men, women and children who happen to be black or Hispanic. They are routinely stopped, searched, harassed, intimidated, humiliated and, in many cases, arrested for no good reason.

Most black elected officials have joined their white colleagues and the media in turning a blind eye to this continuing outrage. And many black cops have joined their white colleagues in the systematic mistreatment.

I have several cousins that have experiences like this:

Last Monday in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, about three dozen grieving young people on their way to a wake for a teenage friend who had been murdered were surrounded by the police, cursed at, handcuffed and ordered into paddy wagons. They were taken to the 83rd precinct stationhouse, where several were thrown into jail. [ link: paid content ]
